Temporary Garden Fencing: How To Build
At the start of last winter, I had a small but thriving blueberry bush. I had just planted it the spring before. But by the end of the last winter, my bush had a few twigs and three leaves. The darn rabbits had helped themselves to the leaves and tender new shoots. So I learned my lesson for the next winter. I needed to help protect my tender bushes from rabbits or any small animal.
Using what I had in the garden shed, I pulled out a large piece of black plastic garden mesh. My mesh was large enough to completely encircle my blueberry bush. Then I placed four 24″ wooden garden stakes underneath of the plastic mesh. I didn’t want them too far apart because I was afraid the fence would sag in the middle. I also wanted to make sure there was enough space on the bottom of the stake. You will need part of the stake to be driven into the ground for it to stand up properly.
When I was finished messing with the placement of the stakes, I used a simple staple gun to secure the mesh in place. Make sure your staple goes over the mesh. You may have to practice staple to get your gun placement correct.
After all four stakes were securely stapled to the mesh, I trimmed some of the mesh so it would look decent.
Now you are ready to install around your bush. I placed the fence around the bush and pushed each stake into the ground just so it wouldn’t fall or move to much while I get all the stakes in their correct place. With a hammer, forcefully pound the stakes into the ground. It can be much easier to drive stakes into the ground the day after a good rain. I would pound each stake a few times going around and around the fence until the bottom of the black mesh meet the ground and there is no room for any little critters coming through.
There was an opening and definitely needed it closed. I used a few pipe cleaners I had in my craft closet and twisted it around the start and end of the fence. You could use zip ties if you would like it more secure or the ties that come on your loaf of bread.
And there you have it, I cheap temporary fence. This fence also rolls up nicely for storage for the next season or any other plant you need to protect.
