Buttermilk Coleslaw Recipe
I grew up eating KFC buckets of chicken along with the side dishes of mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, and of course, coleslaw. Was it me or did they seem never to give you enough sides with all the chicken? Well, I fixed that problem by making my own copycat KFC buttermilk coleslaw. Now, I can make as much as I want. Glorious days are here again!!
This coleslaw is a great family favorite on this homestead and requested for most family functions. It is easy to make ahead of time and set in the fridge overnight if need be.
My version, borrowed from Top Secret Restaurant Recipes cookbook, tastes like the original you can buy at the chain restaurant. It has more of a sweet, creamy flavor, then a tangy vinegar base that some coleslaw recipes often have.

To make this recipe, I calculated the price to be roughly $1.27 or $0.16 per serving size. Purchasing KFC coleslaw prices range from small order at $2.29 to a large order at $3.89. Already the price difference making it at home a more reasonable and affordable alternative.

Copycat KFC Buttermilk Coleslaw
Ingredients
- 4 cups green cabbage, shredded…[$0.40]
- 1 tbsp. onion, minced…[$0.10]
- 2 medium carrots, shredded…[$0.10]
- ⅓ cup white granulated sugar, …[$0.10]
- ½ tsp. salt, …[$0.04]
- ¼ cup milk, …[$0.06]
- ½ cup mayonnaise, …[$0.36]
- ¼ cup buttermilk, …[$0.09]
- 1 tbsp. white vinegar, …[$0.02]
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine everything except for the shredded cabbage and carrots. Whisk together.
- Shred cabbage by chopping into small pieces or medium size skinny strips.
- Add cabbage to the milk mixture. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
