Crocheted Granny Square Christmas Tree Skirt
Christmas tree skirts are a festive decoration use underneath the Christmas tree to cover the ground and that unsightly tree stand. While tree skirts are beautiful additions to your festive Christmas tree, their purpose goes beyond mere tradition. Like each piece of the tree, the skirt had a purpose back in the day that goes beyond its usage today.
The first Christmas trees were actually lit up with candles instead of the modern string of lights we have today. Yes, dripping wax candles that were lit for only a few hours on Christmas. These candles would drip wax onto the floor making a huge mess. Christmas tree skirts were created to gather the wax as well as the fallen pine needles that would drop from the live trees which made clean up easier. Now the tree skirt is used primarily to hide the tree stand and add an interesting décor to the bottom of the tree.
I wanted to crochet my own tree skirt because it gave my Christmas décor much more a rustic, vintage flare. The darker colors of burgundy and dark forest green together with a beige gives the skirt a homey and warm feel. This is a lot of yarn used to make this skirt and therefore is a heavier skirt then the ones you purchase at the store. We here have a 100 year old home with original hardwood floors. I like to have, even if for a month or so, a heavy skirt that almost acts like a rug to block any cold drafts coming up from the floor.
