Sourdough Apple Fritters Recipe
I have realized in my journey through the wonders of sourdough; it can be a love-hate relationship. There is much enjoyment in keeping a small amount of batter breathing and growing in my kitchen. It’s a good feeling having an abundant commodity like yeast growing in wide mouth mason jars for weeks, months, and even years. Baking can be a privilege because, as I write this, the world is still in a pandemic, and there is no yeast to be bought.
I hate it because it is a severe learning curve, and I have destroyed more bread loaves than I care to admit. And that is why I have come up with this wonderful sourdough apple fritter recipe. It’s easy, it uses up some unfed sourdough starter, and it is a hit with the family.
The husband is a fanatic about apple fritters. I swear, he can eat his weight in them if I buy them from the store. He can devour four large fritters in a matter of an hour just. But the store variety loaded with sugar and super sweet. And while fried dough, yes, is not suitable for you, these little sourdough apple fritters have no sugar added to the dough except for the small amount of white icing drizzled on top, which is optional.
Now, if you love sweeter dough, I recommend using one cup of unfed friendship sourdough starter instead of the regular. This starter already fed with plain white granulated sugar and gives a sweet batter every time.
Cost to make the recipe.
The cost to make this recipe is inexpensive and a calculated fritter costing $0.30 or the entire recipe about $4.45. Now, the value of each fritter will significantly depend on the size of each of yours. Therefore, larger fritters will cost more and smaller less.
I like to make these in the early fall when our trees are giving us apples, making that ingredient free, and we also make our vanilla extract, and that can be a cheaper cost as well. Our homesteading price can be closer to $3.00 for the entire recipe or about $0.20 per apple fritter.

Sourdough Apple Fritters
Ingredients
- 1 cup unfed sourdough starter 75% hydration…[$0.30]
- 1 cup unbleached all purpose flour …[$0.23]
- 1 tsp apple pie spice …[$0.20]
- ½ tsp baking soda …[$0.02]
- ½ tsp salt …[$0.05]
- 2 medium apples diced…[$1.29]
- 1-2 cups coconut oil …[$2.00]
- ½ cup powdered sugar …[$0.17]
- ½ Tbsp milk …[$0.01]
- ¼ tsp vanilla extract …[$0.18]
Instructions
- Prepare sourdough starter the night before by mixing 1 cup unfed sourdough starter with 1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour in a medium bowl, cover, and let rest overnight or for at least 4 hours. The starter should start to feed and bubbles form on top.
- Mix in spices, baking soda, and salt to batter. The batter should resemble pancake batter, running.
- Dice clean apples and fold into batter. You can peel apples first if you wish, but it is unnecessary. The batter should be chopped full of apples and become hard to stir.
- Heat coconut oil in a shallow pan over medium heat. I start with 1 cup of oil and add more if needed throughout the process.
- Drop ⅕ cup-sized dollops of apple batter into hot oil and let fry on each side for a minute until each side is golden brown. Nudge dollops slightly once it begins to fry to ensure they are not sticking to the bottom of the pan.
- Set aside on a rack and let cool completely.
- Stir together powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk until desired consistency is achieved and drizzle on top cooled apple fritters. Serve and enjoy.

Thanks for sharing! Does it keep long?
You are welcome. And I can’t answer your question because they typically don’t make it to the next day in my house. They get devoured. 🙂
